NAIA District 8 primarily consisted of NAIA schools in Texas. Initially, it consisted of schools in the western part of the state. By 1958, it consisted mostly of schools that did not belong to a conference. Eventually, it would house members from the Texoma Athletic Conference, the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association (1976-1996), and the Southwestern Athletic Conference, plus western independents.

When the NAIA split into divisions in 1992, Division I teams were assigned to District 4, while Division II teams were assigned to District 8. Additionally, the Division II schools in Louisiana, who had previously competed in District 30, joined District 8.

Primary sources for information on this district include the Austin American-Statesman, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, and the Dallas Morning News.
