NAIA District 31 consisted, until the end of the district qualification era, of NAIA schools in New York and New Jersey. For a brief time, Maryland was also part of the district.

When the NAIA split into divisions in 1992, the schools in the district competed in Division II, except for a few Division I teams who played in District 18.

Primary sources for information on this district include the Schenectady Gazette, the New York Times, and the Albany Times-Union.
