NAIA District 30 primarily consisted of NAIA schools in Louisiana and Mississippi. When the district qualification system began, the district was assigned to Pennsylvania, while Louisiana and Mississippi had originally been in District 18 and District 19. Those districts were essentially left vacant when Mississippi and Louisiana barred their schools from participating in the NAIA tournament when the NAIA began allowing black schools to participate, and in 1965 Pennsylvania (now in need of two districts due to the number of teams) was moved to those two districts. Black schools in Louisiana were then relocated to District 30, and when Louisiana and Mississippi relaxed their restriction, the district became the home of all NAIA schools in the two states.

When the NAIA split into divisions in 1992, most of the schools in the district competed in Division I, with some schools moving to District 8 Division II. By that time, members of District 30 were also members of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference.

Primary sources for information on this district during the Pennsylvania years include the Pittsburgh Press, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Beaver County Times, and the Reading Eagle. The primary sources in Louisiana were the New Orleans Times-Picayune and the Baton Rouge Advocate.
