NAIA District 26 consisted, until the end of the district qualification era, of NAIA schools in the Carolinas, strictly North Carolina after 1968, and even there, it did not encompass the entire state until 1978. By 1990, schools from South Carolina and Tennessee were included as well (via the South Atlantic Conference).

When the NAIA split into divisions in 1992, the teams in the district competed in Division I.

Primary sources for information on this district include the Spartanburg Herald-Journal, the Lexington Dispatch, the Rock Hill Herald, the Sumter Daily Item, the Wilmington Star-News, and the Charlotte Observer.
