In general, as every school in West Virginia was a member of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1924-2013), there was no district playoff in years when the conference's regular season champion also won the conference tournament; if a different team won the tournament, a best-of-three series between the regular season and tournament champions ensued. The exceptions were from 1953-58 when four-team playoffs were held and 1966, where for some odd reason, a one-game playoff was conducted.
