NAIA District 1 primarily consisted of NAIA schools in Washington. In 1973, Alaska and British Columbia were added to the district, and remained there until the abolition of district qualification after the 1993 season. In 1973 only, Districts 1 and 5 (at that time, Montana) played in a bi-district playoff to determine a single entry into the tournament; Alaska-Fairbanks lost this playoff to Eastern Montana.

Primary sources for information on this district include the Spokane Daily Chronicle, the Spokane Spokesman-Review, the Tri-City Herald, the Ellensburg Daily Record, and the Seattle Post-Intelligencer.
