The Saint Mary's University Cardinals compete as members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III basketball. The school last fielded a football team in 1954. Saint Mary's is a private Catholic (Christian Brothers) institution located in Winona, Minnesota, about two hours southeast of Minneapolis. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 1,000.

Saint Mary's campus lies on Winona's northwest side. The nearest major highway is US 61.

The Cardinals' main rival is Winona State, which makes up a good chunk of downtown. In the MIAC, Saint Thomas (MN) is its main antagonist, mainly in Hockey.

For a school that has not had a football team since 1954, the Cardinals still were able to produce 9 players for the NFL. The basketball team, however, has no NBA alumni.
