The Macalester College Scots compete in NCAA Division III as members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference except in football, in which they compete as a NCAA Division III Independents; in 2014, Macalester will become an affiliate member of the Midwest Conference for football only. Macalester is a private non-sectarian institution located in the capital city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 2,000.
The small campus is roughly a square, bordered to the east by Snelling Avenue, to the west by Fairview Avenue, to the north by Summit Avenue, and to the west by Saint Clair Avenue. Grand Avenue runs through the campus. To get to the campus by Interstate 94, use exit 238 onto Snelling Avenue. Macalester Stadium (4,000) and Macalester Gymnasium (1,200) are located next to each other on Snelling Avenue.
Since going independent, briefly, in football, the Scots have no real rivalry. However, the school maintains one in other sports with its fellow Saint Paulites, Hamline, Saint Thomas (MN), Saint Catherine (women's sports only).
The football team, holders of a 50 game losing streak in the 1970s, has seen four of its own play in the NFL, while its basketball program has no NBA/ABA alumni.
