The University of North Carolina at Pembroke, or UNC-Pembroke, Braves compete in NCAA Division II as independents in football, and as members of the Peach Belt Conference in basketball. UNC-Pembroke, formerly "Cherokee Normal" and "Pembroke State", is a public institution located in Pembroke, North Carolina, about 90 minutes southeast of Raleigh. As a historically Indian school, UNC-Pembroke is allowed to retain its Native American mascot without sanction by the NCAA. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 5,000.
