The Western Oregon University Wolves compete in NCAA Division II basketball as members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference, and in football as members of the North Central Conference. The school's football team will begin competing in the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in 2008. Western Oregon, formerly known as "Oregon Normal", "Oregon College of Education", and "Western Oregon State", is a public institution located in Monmouth, Oregon, midway between Portland and Eugene. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,000.
