The Western Washington University Vikings compete as members of the Great Northwest Athletic Conference in NCAA Division II basketball. The school sponsored football until the 2008 season, after which the sport was dropped due to rising costs and a lack of appropriate regional opponents to fill the schedule. Western Washington is a public institution located in Bellingham, Washington, about 20 minutes south of the Canadian border crossing to Vancouver. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 12,000.
