The Concordia College Cobbers compete as members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III football and basketball. Concordia is a private Lutheran institution located in Moorhead, Minnesota, directly across the North Dakota border from Fargo. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 3,000.
The small campus is about a half-mile east of the Mississippi River, one mile south of downtown Moorhead, and a half-mile west of Minnesota State-Moorhead. It's centered on 12th Avenue South and 8th Street. Interstate 94 (exits 1A and 1B) is a mile to the south.
As the most isolated outpost in the MIAC, the Cobbers have turned to closer schools Minnesota State-Moorhead and North Dakota State for its rivalries, although its rivalry with the Bison is less relevant now due to the latter's move to Division I.
The football program has seen 7 players play in the NFL/AFL, the most prominent being Gary Larsen, one of the famous "Purple People Eaters" of the 1970s Minnesota Vikings. But even he is overshadowed by his mentor, Jake Christiansen, the long-time coach and namesake of the stadium they play in. Not surprisingly, the basketball team has not produced an NBA/ABA player thus far.
