The University of Saint Thomas Tommies compete as members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III football and basketball. Saint Thomas is a private Catholic (Diocesan) institution located in the capital city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 5,000.
The picturesque campus is split in two; the north portion is located near the western terminus of Summit Avenue, Saint Paul's most prestigious avenue. It's bordered to the east by Cleveland Avenue, to the west by Cretin Avenue, to the south by Grand Avenue, and to the north by Marshall Avenue. The south campus is located next to the Mississippi River. O'Shaugnessy Stadium (5,000) and Schoenecker Arena (2,000), part of the Anderson Athletic Complex, are located on the west end of the north campus.
The Tommies' major rivalry is with Saint John's (MN), a fellow Catholic school. The football rivalry, in particular, has resulted in an increased interest in the two schools to the point that temporary bleachers have to be erected at the stadiums of the two schools when the two teams play. It has also allowed Saint Thomas to broadcast their games on the radio. Bethel (MN) is also a football rival, albeit a recent and smaller one. Fellow Saint Paulites Hamline, Macalester, and Saint Catherine (women's sports only) are rivals as well to some extent.
The Tommies have sent 21 former football players to the NFL, the most prominent of which is Walt Kiesling, a hall of famer in Canton. Yet despite recent success, the last Tommie to play in the NFL did so in the 1980s. To date, no Tommie has played in the NBA.
