The Hamline College Pipers compete as members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division III football and basketball. Hamline is a private Methodist institution located in the capital city of Saint Paul, Minnesota. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 2,000.
The campus is located on Snelling Avenue, about a mile south of the Minnesota State Fairgrounds and and a mile north of University Avenue. Both the university and nearby Hamline Avenue are named for a Methodist bishop. The closest interstate exit is Exit 238 off of Interstate 94. Robert and Alexandra Klas Center (2,000) is on the north end of the campus, bordered by Pierce Butler Road. Hutton Arena (2,000) is to the stadium's south, fronting Snelling Avenue.
The main rival of the Pipers, like seemingly everyone else in the MIAC, is Saint John's (MN). But the Johnnies usually look down on the Pipers, prefering instead rivalries with Bethel (MN) and Saint Thomas (MN). The Pipers do maintain a rivalry with the Tommies, playing each year for the Wilson Brothers Trophy.
Eleven Pipers have made it to the NFL, all but one before World War II. The hoops program has sent 7 Pipers to the NBA/ABA, none more famous than Hall of Famer Vern Mikkelsen. The most famous person associated with the program, however, is Joe Hutton, Sr. He coached the Pipers to three NAIA Division I Men's Basketball Tournament championships, and is also a Hall of Famer and namesake of the arena the Pipers play in.
