The Sam Houston State University Bearkats compete as members of the Southland Conference in NCAA Division I FCS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Sam Houston State is a public institution located in Huntsville, Texas, a little over an hour north of Houston. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 16,000.
