The Chowan University Hawks compete as members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association in NCAA Division III football and basketball. The school is the first (and, thus far, only) non-HBCU to be a member of the conference. Chowan is a private Baptist institution located in Murfreesboro, North Carolina, in the Inner Banks region of the northeast part of the state, about a half-hour southwest of Norfolk, Virginia. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 1,000.
