The University of New Orleans Privateers currently compete as Southland Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. New Orleans is a public institution located on the lakeshore in New Orleans, Louisiana. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 13,000.
In the wake of financial troubles related to Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans had announced plans in 2009 to reclassify to Division III, then in 2011, opted to instead reclassify to Division II. The school obtained an invitation to the Gulf South Conference, and announced its intention to begin a football program which would start varsity play in 2015. In March 2012, nearing the end of the reclassification process (at which time the school was still technically in Division I), the school announced that they would instead remain in Division I after all, ultimately resulting in the move to the Southland. As a result, the Privateers chose to reverse its decision to add a football team, though it remains an option to do so later.
