The Nicholls State University Colonels compete as members of the Southland Conference in NCAA Division I FCS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Nicholls State is a public institution located in Thibodeaux, Louisiana, in the heart of Cajun Country about an hour southwest of New Orleans. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 7,000.
NSU is on the east side of Thibodaux, at the corner of AL 1 (East First Street) and NSU Acadia Drive, a half-mile east of downtown. Exit 202 (LA 24) off US 90 in Gray, about eight miles south of downtown Thibodaux, is the closest freeway access. John L. Guidry Stadium (13,000) is at the end of NSU Acadia Drive, on the south side of campus; Stopher Gym (4,000) is on the north side, also on NSU Acadia Drive two blocks south of LA 1.
Nicholls State's fiercest rivalry is with Southeastern Louisiana.
NSU has sent 20 players to the NFL, led by former Chiefs DB Gary Barbaro and Buccaneers, Browns, and Panthers WR Mark Carrier. The only NBA player to come from Nicholls is former Spurs and Bullets F Gerard King.
