The following conference realignments took place during the summer preceding the 1982-1983 academic year:
Football
Conference Reclassification:
- Ivy League moved from NCAA Division I-A to NCAA Division I-AA
- Mid-American Conference moved from NCAA Division I-A to NCAA Division I-AA
- Missouri Valley Conference became a dual-division conference
