The following conference realignments took place during the summer preceding the 1955-1956 academic year:

Football

School Left Joined
Western Reserve Mid-American Conference Presidents' Athletic Conference

Men's Basketball

Conference Formed:

School Left Joined
Bradley NCAA Independents Missouri Valley Conference
La Salle Middle Atlantic Conference Philadelphia Big Five
Pennsylvania Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League Philadelphia Big Five
Saint Joseph's (PA) NCAA Independents Philadelphia Big Five
Temple NCAA Independents Philadelphia Big Five
Villanova NCAA Independents Philadelphia Big Five
Western Reserve Mid-American Conference Presidents' Athletic Conference

† - The Philadelphia Big Five was (and is) not a true "conference", and when not competing as an independent each member has a primary affiliation, with the Big Five being a secondary concern. However, the Big Five does award a championship and annual player honors, thus behaving in every respect as a conference. Therefore, we consider schools which were previously independent upon joining to no longer be independent. La Salle maintained its membership in the Middle Atlantic Conference on joining the Big Five; Pennsylvania maintained its membership in the Eastern Intercollegiate Basketball League. Saint Joseph's, Temple, and Villanova, while technically still independents, are considered here to no longer be independent after 1955.
