The Newberry College Indians compete as members of the South Atlantic Conference in NCAA Division II football and basketball. Newberry is a private Lutheran institution located in Newberry, South Carolina, about 45 minutes northwest of Columbia. The school lost its appeal to the NCAA to be removed from the list of schools utilizing hostile or abusive mascots and trademarks; however, Newberry is nonetheless retaining their teams' Indian nickname. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 1,000.
