UPI Small College Football National Champions
From Varsity Pride
United Press International began selecting a small-college national champion following the 1958 season, and continuing on through 1974 before the existence of playoffs for both Division II and Division III made the exercise irrelevant. As with the AP, in the seventeen years of the UPI selection only two teams which are not currently in Division I earned the honor: Pittsburg State in 1961, and Los Angeles State (which no longer fields a football team) in 1964.
