The Sun Bowl is a bowl game held in El Paso, Texas since 1935. The game has been held at Sun Bowl Stadium since 1963; prior to this, the game was played at El Paso High School Stadium from 1935-1937, and at Kidd Field from 1938-1962. From 1989-1993, the bowl was known as the John Hancock Bowl without any reference to its historical name (as opposed to having "Sun Bowl" preceded by a sponsorship).

In the early days of the bowl, the host team was the champion of the Border Conference. After that conference ceased to exist, the bowl hosted the Missouri Valley Conference champions for a few years, then began selecting two teams at-large; this continued until 1995, when the bowl began matching teams from the Pacific-12 Conference and Big Ten Conference (with an exception in 1998 due to insufficient eligible teams from the latter). This arrangement ended after the 2006 season, upon which the bowl went through a varied sequence of tie-ins. Beginning in 2011, the Sun Bowl will match the Pac-12 against the Atlantic Coast Conference.

CBS has aired the Sun Bowl continuously since 1968, the longest such partnership among current bowls.
