The University of Minnesota Duluth Bulldogs compete as members of the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference in NCAA Division II football and basketball. Minnesota-Duluth is a public institution located in Duluth, Minnesota, in the northeast part of the state on the shores of Lake Superior. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 9,000.
Minnesota-Duluth is located in northeast Duluth, a mile or so off of Lake Superior. When the winds blow off the lake, as they often do, the temperature gets cold. Also located a mile from the campus is the terminus of Interstate 35 (which becomes MN 61 and runs to the Canadian Border, paralleling Lake Superior's shore line). The campus' shape is that of a square, the main roads being Arrowhead Road, Saint Mary's Street, and Woodland Avenue. Griggs Field at Joseph A. Malosky Stadium (4,000) and Romano Gymnasium (2,759) are part of the Sports and Health Center complex, located off of Saint Mary's Street. AMSOIL Arena (7,000), where mens and womens hockey call home is in downtown Duluth, part of the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center complex that includes the DECC Arena, which is the former home of the hockey programs.
The Bulldogs enjoy healthy rivalries with Minnesota State-Mankato and Saint Cloud State in all sports. The three came over from the old North Central Conference and were also mates in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association(The Mavericks are staying in the WCHA, the Bulldogs and Huskies are not(see below)). Speaking of hockey, no rival draws the ire of the Bulldog faithful than Minnesota. When these two teams play, sellout crowds at both AMSOIL Arena and Mariucci Arena are the rule, not the exception. With the Gophers joining the Big Ten Hockey Conference in 2013, and the Bulldogs moving to the National Collegiate Hockey Conference the same year, the rivalry will likely be diminished. Then, however, North Dakota, Denver, and Colorado College will become more prominent.
Despite being in the same town where Ole Hasgurd launched the NFL's Duluth Kelleys (or Eskimos as they were called later on), only 6 Bulldogs have played in the NFL/AFL. The Bulldogs' contribution to the NBA is limited to Jay Budinger, who had a short spell. The hockey program, however, has produced numerous players for the NHL/WHA. The most famous is Brett Hull. Though noted as the son of Bobby "Golden Jet" Hull, Brett is himself an enshrinee of the Hockey Hall of Fame.
