The Helms Foundation retroactively selected a major-college basketball national champion in 1936, dating back to the beginning of organized collegiate basketball competition in 1901. They continued naming champions thereafter on an annual basis, although after 1954 the Helms Champion was universally the same as the winner of the NCAA Tournament. In the four years between 1939 and 1954 where the Helms Champion differed from the NCAA Tournament champion, we will recognize those champions; we will not recognize Helms Champions in the years where they coincided with the NCAA Tournament champion.
