Birmingham Bowl
The Birmingham Bowl is a bowl game held at Legion Field in Birmingham, Alabama since 2006. The game has (almost) never actually been branded as the Birmingham Bowl, although this is the name under which it was initially certified (and as such, in keeping with this site's policy on bowl names, is the "official" name of the bowl here). From 2006-2010, the game was known as the Papa Johns.com Bowl. After a very brief time being referred to by its "official" name while seeking a sponsor, the game became known as the BBVA Compass Bowl in 2010.
The game has always featured a team from the Big East Conference (later the American Athletic Conference). Initially, the opponent was drawn from Conference USA; since 2008 the opposition has come from the Southeastern Conference (although in 2008 the SEC was unable to provide a team, leading to North Carolina State's invitation). After 2010, the game was moved to January, and now takes place two days before the BCS National Championship Game.
