Template:Nittop There weren't a great many surprises in the 2007 NIT. The primary change made by the NCAA was the reduction of the field from 40 teams to 32, bracketing the tournament in a seeded regional format. Aside from sixth- and seventh-seeded North Carolina State and Marist scoring first-round upsets -- guaranteeing that one of them would advance to the East Region final -- seeds mostly held. Indeed, all four #1 seeds moved on to New York, where West Virginia secured their first NIT championship.

Automatic Bids

The following teams received automatic bids to the NIT as a result of winning their conference's regular season championship but not receiving an invitation to the NCAA Tournament:

  • Austin Peay
  • Delaware State
  • East Tennessee State
  • Marist
  • Mississippi Valley State
  • South Alabama
  • Toledo
  • Vermont
