The Campbell University Fighting Camels compete as members of the Pioneer Football League in NCAA Division I FCS football, and the Atlantic Sun Conference in NCAA Division I basketball, until 2011 when the school will return to the Big South Conference in all sports except football. The school ceased sponsoring football in 1951 (when it was still a two-year college), but reinstated its program for the 2008 season. Campbell is a private Baptist institution located in the town of Buies Creek, North Carolina, in the center of the state near Sanford. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 7,000.
The campus occupies most of the southern half of the town of Buies Creek, and in realistic terms the campus is the town as most local businesses are situated on campus. It surrounds the intersection of the two main highways that serve the town: US 421 (Cornelius Harnett Boulevard) and NC 27 (Leslie Campbell Avenue). Barker-Lane Stadium (5,000) sits at the intersection of US 421 and Wade Stewart Road, while John W. Pope Convocation Center is at the corner of Leslie Campbell Avenue and Main Street.
Campbell's main rival is, due mostly to sheer number of games played, probably North Carolina-Wilmington. The only school Campbell has faced even half as often is North Carolina-Pembroke.
Campbell has sent no players to the NFL (not surprisingly), and has one NBA/ABA alumnus in George Lehmann, who had a seven-year journeyman career mostly in the ABA.
