The school's teams were known as the Redmen until 2007; although the NCAA declined to put Northeastern State on the list of schools with mascots deemed to promote hostile racial attitudes (partially due to the school having the highest Native American enrollment of any university in the United States, and the student body continuing to support the nickname), the school voluntarily made the change to forestall future issues. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 7,000.
