The Drexel University Dragons compete as members of the Colonial Athletic Association in NCAA Division I basketball. The school has not sponsored football since 1974. Drexel is a private non-sectarian institution located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, just across Market Street from the University of Pennsylvania. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 12,000.
The campus is just west of downtown Philadelphia, across the Schyulkill River. The site is (mostly) bounded by N 33rd Street and N 34th Street to the east and west, and by US 13 (Powelton Avenue) and Chestnut Street to the north and south. Exit 345 from I-76, three blocks away, is the closed freeway access. Daskalakis Center (2,300), site of parts of the 1993-1996 America East Men's Basketball Tournaments, is near the southwest corner of campus, at the corner of 34th and Market. It's only three blocks away from The Palestra, Penn's home gym.
Drexel's chief rival, although the sentiment isn't returned with nearly the same ferocity, is Pennsylvania. Delaware is also a primary rival, and although Drexel is not a member of the Philadelphia "Big Five" (Pennsylvania, Villanova, Saint Joseph's, Temple, and La Salle), rivalries do exist with those schools.
Two Dragons have reached the NBA: Michael Anderson and Malik Rose. In the NFL, RB Jim Ostendarp appeared in nine games for the Giants in the early '50s.
