The University of Maryland, Baltimore County, or "UMBC", Retrievers compete as members of the America East Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. UMBC is a public institution located in Catonsville and Arbutus, Maryland, communities just southwest of the city of Baltimore. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 10,000.
The campus, located about five miles southwest of downtown Baltimore and five miles north of Baltimore-Washington International Airport, is directly accessible from the final northbound exit of I-195 from the airport and points south; otherwise, access is via MD-372 (Wilkins Avenue) and I-695 exit 12C. The RAC (4,000), located on the south side of campus, hosted the 2008 America East Men's Basketball Tournament finals.
UMBC's chief rival, although they no longer compete in the same conference, is crosstown Towson.
UMBC has yet to send any alumni into the NBA, but three baseball players have seen service time in the major leagues, Ps Jay Witasick, Wayne Franklin, and Rick Steirer.
