The Shawnee State University Bears compete as members of the American Mideast Conference (1949-2012) in NAIA Division I basketball. Shawnee State is a public institution located in Portsmouth, Ohio, about 90 minutes south of Columbus. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 4,000.
