The Vanguard University Lions compete as members of the Golden State Athletic Conference in NAIA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. Vanguard, formerly known as "Southern California College", is a private Assemblies of God institution located in Costa Mesa, California, about a half-hour southeast of Los Angeles. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 1,000.
