The West Virginia State University Yellow Jackets compete as members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1924-2013) in NCAA Division II football and basketball. West Virginia State, a historically black college, is a public institution located in Institute, West Virginia, a western suburb of Charleston. The school now has an 80% white enrollment despite its history as a black college; it was formerly a land-grant institution, but voluntarily surrendered that status post-integration. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 5,000.
