The Bluefield State College Big Blues compete as members of the West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (1924-2013) in NCAA Division II basketball. The school has not sponsored football since 1955. Bluefield State, a historically black college, is a public institution located in Bluefield, West Virginia, in the far south of the state on the Virginia border, about two hours south of Charleston. The school was originally known as "Bluefield Colored Institute." The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 2,000.
