The University of Texas at Brownsville Ocelots ceased operations in 2015 when the school merged with the University of Texas-Pan American to form the University of Texas-Rio Grande Valley. The school had not previously sponsored football or basketball, but was a member of the Red River Athletic Conference competing in NAIA Division I for other sports. Texas-Brownsville, whose athletic teams were formerly known as the Scorpions, was a public institution located in Brownsville, Texas, at the furthest southern tip of the state about four hours south of San Antonio. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 8,000.
