The Intercollegiate Athletic Association of the Northwest was a short-lived nineteenth-century conference formed solely for football by Michigan, Minnesota, Northwestern, and Wisconsin. The idea was a disaster, as travel requirements and finances took their toll in only two short years, and the schools agreed to disband. Undaunted, the same four schools joined forces again just two years later, along with Chicago, Illinois, and Purdue, to form the Intercollegiate Conference of Faculty Representatives, known more commonly at the time as the Western Conference; it is know more well known as the Big Ten Conference.
