The University of California, Merced Golden Bobcats compete as members of the California Pacific Conference in NAIA Division II basketball. The school does not sponsor football. Cal-Merced is a public institution located in Merced, California, located halfway between Fresno and Modesto. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 5,000.
Cal-Merced's campus is located in a rural portion of Merced County, about 4 miles northeast of Merced. The area had been farmland as late as 2005 and even today is still considered a census designated place. CA 99 is the major highway nearest the campus.
Compared to their sister campuses in the University of California, Cal-Merced is a very young university, in fact, it is the youngest research university in the United States. Thus the Golden Bobcats have no rivals to speak of. The university hopes to rectify this by moving to the NCAA and, more specifically the California Collegiate Athletic Association in the next few years.
Naturally for a school still in its infancy, Cal-Merced has not produced a professional athlete yet.
