Georgia State

The Georgia State University Panthers compete as members of the Colonial Athletic Association in NCAA Division I basketball and as independents in NCAA Division I FCS football. In 2012, the football team will begin competing in the CAA. The school does not currently sponsor football, although an intense feasibility study is underway. Georgia State is a public institution located in downtown Atlanta, Georgia. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 20,000.
Georgia State occupies a fairly sizable tract of downtown Atlanta in the Five Points district, centered around the intersection of Courtland, Marietta, and Decatur Streets. Exit 248A or 248B off I-75/85 provide the most convenient freeway access, three blocks from the center of campus. GSU Sports Arena is on campus at the corner of Decatur Street and Piedmont Avenue. The Georgia Dome is located about a half-mile west of campus, easily accessible via Marietta Street.
Georgia State doesn't have what one would term a heated rivalry with anyone, but even so the consensus appears to be that their main rival is Mercer. Once the Panthers join the CAA for football, this may well change.
As one would expect, no former Panthers have suited up in the NFL yet. Lorenzo Williams had an eight-year NBA career, and Earnie Killum appeared in four games for the Lakers in 1971. Former Kentucky, Alabama, and Georgia Tech coach Bill Curry is overseeing the start of the Panther football program. Hall-of-Fame coach Lefty Driesell headed the basketball program from 1997-2003.
