The Saint Bonaventure University Bonnies compete as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school has not sponsored football since 1952. Saint Bonaventure is a private Catholic (Franciscan) institution located in the town of Allegany, New York, on the outskirts of the city of Olean. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 2,000. The school's athletic teams were formerly knows as the Brown Indians, but this was changed long ago in response to sensitivity concerns -- in fact, well before such concerns became widespread throughout athletics.

The campus is located along NY 417 (Main Street), bounded to the south by the Allegheny River. Access from I-86 is available at exit 24 (NY 417) or exit 25 (Buffalo Street), both of which are a couple of miles from campus. Reilly Center (5,780) is located on the southern portion of College Street, a road which circles the center portion of campus.

Saint Bonaventure's chief rivals are Canisius and Niagara; those two teams consider one another their chief rivals with the Bonnies a step down, but that is primarily a result of them playing in the same conference while Saint Bonaventure does not.

Four-time Pro Bowl DB Jack Butler heads the list of twelve former Bonnies to play in the NFL. There have been fifteen Bonnies in the NBA/ABA ranks, including Hall-of-Famer Bob Lanier.
