The University of North Carolina at Charlotte, generally referred to as "Charlotte", 49ers compete as members of the Atlantic 10 Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. The school had not sponsored football since 1948, but has now officially set a start date of 2013 for NCAA Division I FCS competition. UNC-Charlotte is a public institution located in a suburban portion of Charlotte, North Carolina. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 17,000.
The campus is located on the northeast side of Charlotte, bounded by NC 49 (University City Boulevard) on the east, NC 24 (W.T. Harris Boulevard) on the south, US 29 (Tryon Street) on the west, and Mallard Creek Church Road on the north. Exits 45 and 46 on I-85 and exits 32 and 33 on I-485 all lead to one of these four roadways within a mile of the campus. Dale F. Halton Arena (9,105) is located in the heart of the grounds, off Cameron Boulevard. The site of the new football stadium has not yet been officially decided.
Charlotte's rivalries are complex. While in Conference USA, a heated rivalry formed with Cincinnati, but that has died off with the two teams leaving for different conferences. A local rivalry with Davidson exists, but it's somewhat one-sided generally and has briefly lapsed due to scheduling issues. In truth, Charlotte's main antagonist is North Carolina, but the reasons for this are completely outside the realm of athletics... and North Carolina fans couldn't care less about Charlotte.
As would be expected, Charlotte has provided zero players to the NFL. Ten 49ers have made the jump to the NBA or ABA, however. The most recognizable of these is without question Cedric Maxwell, who had a 10-year career mostly with Boston and Houston, and was named MVP of the 1981 NBA finals.
