The University of South Dakota Coyotes compete as independents in NCAA Division I FCS football and in NCAA Division I basketball, effective with the 2008 season as they transition from NCAA Division II. South Dakota is a public institution located in Vermillion, South Dakota, in the far southeastern corner of the state about 45 minutes south of Sioux Falls. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 6,000.
