Pioneer Bowl (old)
The Pioneer Bowl was a bowl game held in Wichita Falls, Texas from 1971 through 1978, and in 1981 and 1982. In 1971-1972, the game served as the NCAA College Division Midwest Regional championship. With the advent of the playoff system, from 1973-1976 the game served as one of the two NCAA Division II national semifinals, and then served as the NCAA Division II Championship Game in 1977 and the NCAA Division I-AA Championship Game in 1978 and 1981-82, before the Pioneer Bowl designation was finally retired.
This game is not to be confused with the current Pioneer Bowl, which is a regular bowl game contested since 1997 between the champions of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (or their designates, should the champion be selected for the NCAA Division II playoffs or simply wish not to participate).
