The Cotton Bowl Classic is a major bowl game held at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The game was held at the Cotton Bowl (formerly known as Fair Park Stadium) in Dallas, Texas from 1937-2009.
With the exception of 1940, the champion of the Southwest Conference hosted the Cotton Bowl until that conference's demise in 1995. Beginning in 1996, the Big 12 Conference provided the host team, with the Cotton Bowl selecting first after the BCS bowls. Since 1999, the Big 12's opponent in the game has come from the Southeastern Conference.
The Cotton Bowl has been the site of some of college football's most enduring moments; Alabama's Tommy Lewis leaping from the Crimson Tide bench to illegally tackle Rice's Dickey Moegle in 1954, Notre Dame's return to bowl games in 1970 after a self-imposed 45-year ban, Joe Montana leading the Irish to a 23-point fourth quarter comeback over Houston in 1979, and several national championships were decided in Dallas prior to the advent of the BCS.
