The University of New Orleans Privateers currently compete as independents in NCAA Division I basketball. The school does not sponsor football. New Orleans is a public institution located on the lakeshore in New Orleans, Louisiana. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 13,000. New Orleans announced plans in 2009 to reclassify to Division III, then opted to instead reclassify to Division II. The school obtained an invitation to the Gulf South Conference, and announced its intention to begin a football program which would start varsity play in 2015. In March 2012, nearing the end of the reclassification process (at which time the school was still technically in Division I), they announced that they would instead remain in Division I after all. The status of the school's football plans in the wake of this announcement is uncertain.
