The Colgate University Raiders compete as members of the Patriot League in NCAA Division I FCS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Colgate is a private non-sectarian institution located in the village of Hamilton, New York, in the central part of the state southeast of Syracuse. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 3000. Colgate's teams were formerly known as the "Red Raiders." In the 1970s the school phased out its use of a Native American mascot, but in 2001 the "Red" was dropped due to concerns that the nickname was still insensitive.
The campus is located just outside of Hamilton to the south, bisected by Alternate NY 12B (Broad Street). The closest freeway access is nearly a half-hour away, at exit 34 of I-90 (the New York State Thruway) at Canastota. Cotterell Court (3,000), located just off Broad Street on the south end of campus, hosted the 1996 Patriot League Men's Basketball Tournament final. Nearby, but located on the perpendicular College Street (which bisects the campus east-west) is Andy Kerr Stadium (10,221).
Colgate's chief rival is Cornell; a rivalry with Syracuse was formerly as heated until Colgate moved to Division I FCS.
Colgate finished the 1932 season undefeated and unscored upon in football, at a time when the school was considered a major college, spurring the slogan "unbeaten, untied, unscored upon, and uninvited" -- the latter in reference to being spurned by the Rose Bowl. As a result, Parke H. Davis, whose selections are recognized by the NCAA, awarded them a share of the national championship for that year. A total of 69 Colgate alumni have appeared in the NFL, led by DBs Eugene Robinson and Mark Murphy, RB Marv Hubbard, OLs Danny Fortmann and Al Jamison, and TE Jacque MacKinnon (all of whom played in Pro Bowls), as well as long-time Oakland RB Mark van Eeghen. The NBA has seen four former Raiders on the hardwood, including Adonal Foyle and 10,000 point scorer Carl Braun.
