The University at Albany, The State University of New York, generally referred to as simply "Albany", Great Danes compete as members of the Northeast Conference in NCAA Division I FCS football, and in the America East Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. Albany is a public institution located in New York's capital, Albany. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 12,000.
The campus is located in the western portion of the city, directly southeast of the interesection between I-90 and I-87. Two exits off I-90 provide direct access to the north side of the campus. US 20 (Western Avenue) also skirts the south side of the campus, where University Field (10,000) and SEFCU Arena (4,538) are both located. SEFCU Arena (naming rights held by State Employees Federal Credit Union), formerly the "Recreation and Convocation Center", hosted the 2006 and 2009 America East Conference tournaments.
Albany's chief rivalries lie with Siena, Binghamton, and Vermont.
Albany has had one player, Rashad Barksdale, see regular-season action in the NFL, but no NBA players. Football coach Bob Ford has helmed the program since its inception in 1973.
