The State University of New York at Stony Brook Seawolves compete as members of the Big South Conference in NCAA Division I FCS football, and in the America East Conference in NCAA Division I basketball. Stony Brook is a public institution located in Stony Brook, New York, on the north shore of Long Island about halfway between New York City and the Hamptons. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 15,000. The sports teams were known as the Patriots prior to 1994.

The campus is located southeast of the intersection of NY-25A (Country Road) and Nicolls Road. The nearest freeway access is about 6 miles away, at exit 60 of the Long Island Expressway (I-495). LaValle Stadium (8,300) and the Sports Complex (5,226) are located on the north side of campus.

Stony Brook's chief rival is (probably) Albany.

Stony Brook has yet to graduate a player to either the NBA or NFL. However, noted coach Rollie Massimino coached the (then) Patriots early in his career.
