The Florida International University, or FIU, Golden Panthers compete as members of the Sun Belt Conference in NCAA Division I FBS football and in NCAA Division I basketball. Florida International is a public institution located in Miami, Florida. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 31,000. FIU's teams were known as the "Sunblazers" until 1987.
FIU is located on the far southwest side of Miami, on US 41 (SW 8th Street) between SW 107th Avenue (FL 985) and Florida's Turnpike (FL 821). Exit 25 off the Turnpike is the US 41 exit, and the campus is immediately to the east of the interchange. The interior of the campus is ringed by Campus Circle; FIU Stadium is on the south side of the circle, U.S. Century Bank Arena on the west.
FIU's main rival is Florida Atlantic, with a lesser yet similarly intense rivalry with Miami (FL).
Two Golden Panthers have seen NFL action: DB Nick Turnbull and LB Antwan Barnes. The same number of FIU alumni have played in the NBA, but with considerably more success: Raja Bell and Carlos Arroyo.
