The Houston Baptist University Huskies compete as members of the Great West Conference (2004-2013) in NCAA Division I basketball. The school does not have a football team, although has announced that it will start one contingent on receiving an invitation to a football-playing all-sports conference. Houston Baptist is a private Baptist institution located in southwest Houston, Texas. The school has an undergraduate enrollment of around 2000.
Houston Baptist is enclosed within the triangle formed by US 59 (Southwest Freeway), Fondren Road, and Beechnut Street in southwestern Houston. Both Fondren and Beechnut are directly accessible via offramp from US 59, and the campus is immediately on the east side of the freeway. Sharp Gymnasium (1,500) sits in the center of campus.
The Huskies are without a real rival at this point, having left their former rivalries behind on moving to Division I. Their closest conference rival is Texas-Pan American. Even in their years in the Red River Athletic Conference, it's hard to pinpoint a specific rival as the school dominated the conference, winning nine straight conference regular season titles before moving back to the NCAA.
Houston Baptist has, as one would expect, sent no players to the NFL. E.C. Coleman is the only former Husky to reach the NBA, playing six years mostly with the New Orleans Jazz.
